Shodo, meaning ‘the way of writing’, has been practiced in Japan for centuries. Once the preserve of scholars, monks, and members of the aristocracy, it is now taught at an elementary level in state schools, and to more advanced stages in private clubs throughout Japan. Practitioners of the art strive for certain things. But, because it is an immediate art, every effort, successful or not, tells its own unique story. Try it for yourself!
